http://www.airnow.gov/ now offers an air quality outlook map across the US.  The EPA established a tighter fine particulate standard in 2006 and this air quality outlook map helps you identify the forecast information.  They have a 6 point scale for an air quality monitoring index ranging from Good through to Hazardous.  

 

This index for reporting daily air quality tells you how clean or polluted your outdoor air is, and highlights possible associated health effects . The EPA calculates the index for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution (also known as particulate matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. For each of these pollutants, EPA has established national air quality standards to protect public health.
